Building Program Service
Library Buildings must be able to support the library mission for it's specific community!

The purpose of a building program:
  • Guide an architect’s imagination towards a desired library reality.
  • Give a sense of the feelings and needs of the public and staff as they use   or  work in a current building.
  • Delineate a community's dream library building.
  • Inform an architect about the programs, ambiance and services that the library wishes to deliver to the community.
  • Explain how the current building works and where it is lacking or frustrating.
  • Determine the necessary footage required for each area, furniture and equipment and thoughts on signage.

The process of creating a Building Program:

  • Analyze space and storage needs for current and projected patterns of use, staff functions, print and non-print collections, technologies, and services to the community.
  • Script a building program based on what people want, the trends in library service, and a projected future.
  • Suggest possibilities for enhanced community use.
  • Compare actual and proposed assignable areas for public and staff use.
  • Determine proximities; create a diagram showing what areas should be next to each other.
  • Fill out a form for each area which includes the name of the area, its functions, square footage, the number of occupants to be accommodated, proximities, equipment, storage, ambiance desired, signage, computers, internet connections, wireless technologies, acoustics, environmental considerations, lighting, furnishings, and shelving.
  • If a site choice is to be determined, list the pros and cons of each possible site.
  •  Assist in presentation of the building program to Library Board and others as determined.
